Market Watch: Softbank Sinks Tumble in Focus as New Reports Land

SoftBank Group fell about 10% on Wednesday as Asian semiconductor and technology shares dropped in tandem with overnight losses on Wall Street. The session was shaped by renewed concern that artificial-intelligence-related stocks had become stretched after a brief rebound faded.

In Japan, chip equipment maker Advantest fell 3.8% and Renesas Electronics dropped 3.4%, underscoring the regional pressure on AI-linked names.

SoftBank’s decline was far steeper than the losses in those peer stocks. That relative gap points to heavier selling in SoftBank than in the sector as a whole, even if the broader market backdrop still did much of the work.

A possible additional pressure point came from unconfirmed reporting that SoftBank’s effort to raise at least $6 billion through a margin loan backed by its OpenAI stake had hit a snag. The same report said the company was exploring other funding options and could revisit the loan later.

What is clear is the price action: SoftBank sold off much harder than other major Japanese tech names during the session. If investors gave weight to the financing report, that would have added a company-specific concern on top of the regional move against AI-related shares.

The financing question matters because SoftBank is closely associated with large, high-conviction bets in fast-growing technology companies. Any uncertainty around funding flexibility can sharpen scrutiny of the balance sheet, particularly on a day when investors are already cutting exposure to richly valued growth and chip-linked assets.

For now, the market has more certainty on the direction of the shares than on the exact trigger. If pressure on global AI and semiconductor stocks eases, SoftBank could benefit with the rest of the sector; if concerns about funding persist, the stock may continue to trade with an added discount until clearer information emerges.
