Railway operating expenses rose more sharply, increasing 21% to $2.341 billion from $1.935 billion. As a result, income from railway operations declined 4% to $1.124 billion, while net income fell to $734 million from $768 million. Diluted earnings per share were $3.26, compared with $3.41 in the second quarter of 2025. The company’s reported operating ratio was 67.6%, versus 62.2% a year earlier. For the first six months of 2026, railway operating revenues increased to $6.463 billion from $6.103 billion.
