American Express Co. furnished a Regulation FD update on July 15, 2026, providing preliminary credit-performance statistics for its U.S. Consumer and U.S. Small Business Card balances held for investment for the months ended April 30, May 31 and June 30, 2026, and for the three months ended June 30, 2026. The disclosure was made under Form 8-K Item 7.01 and did not report an insider transaction, securities issuance, share sale, option grant, or other equity-related action. The key corporate action disclosed was that, during June 2026, American Express sold certain previously written-off Card balances to a third party. The company said the proceeds from that sale were reflected in its reported June 2026 net write-off rates and in the three-month period ended June 30, 2026. Specifically, the sale reduced the June net write-off rate by approximately 0.3 percentage points for the U.S. Consumer portfolio and approximately 0.1 percentage points for the U.S. Small Business portfolio. The company noted that its net write-off rates are presented on a principal-only basis, excluding interest and fees. For U.S. Consumer Card balances held for investment, American Express reported total Card balances of $113.8 billion at June 30, 2026. The portfolio’s 30-plus-days-past-due rate was shown at 1.1%, and the net write-off rate, principal only, was 1.4% for June. Comparable disclosed net write-off rates were 2.0% for May and 2.1% for April, with a three-month net write-off rate of 1.8% for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. For U.S. Small Business Card balances held for investment, the company reported total Card balances of $45.9 billion at June 30, 2026, compared with $46.7 billion at May 31 and $45.8 billion at April 30. The June 30-plus-days-past-due rate was shown at 1.5%. The net write-off rate, principal only, was 2.3% for June, 2.6% for May and 2.4% for April. Combined U.S. Consumer and U.S. Small Business Card balances held for investment totaled $159.7 billion at June 30, $160.5 billion at May 31 and $157.2 billion at April 30. American Express also provided credit-performance information for the American Express Credit Account Master Trust, or Lending Trust, for the three most recent monthly reporting periods. The trust’s ending total principal balance was $25.2 billion for the June 1–June 30, 2026 period, compared with $25.4 billion for May and $25.0 billion for April. The annualized default rate, net of recoveries, was reported at 0.7% for June and 1.3% for May. The company said the June default-rate calculation for the Lending Trust also reflected proceeds allocable to the trust from the sale of previously written-off Card balances. The company emphasized that the Lending Trust data are not directly comparable with the broader U.S. Consumer and U.S. Small Business Card portfolio statistics. The trust reflects only revolve-eligible balances, while the broader portfolio statistics include both revolve-eligible and pay-in-full balances, as well as securitized and non-securitized balances. American Express also cautioned that monthly credit metrics can vary because of portfolio mix, account vintage, aging of balances, calculation mechanics, the number of days in a month, holidays, seasonality and the timing of third-party information.
